GIBRALTAR | 2012 Meet the Misses e.49 - Miss Gibraltar 2012

The Rock of Gibraltar, whether it is from the air, from the sea or from either the Costa del Sol or the western end of the Bay, has an impressive stature, towering isolated above the surrounding countryside, that causes the greatest impact. It has had this effect on people for many thousands of years. Gibraltar is a beacon which signals the position of the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow neck which separates Europe from Africa and provides the only link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. It has an area of 6.8 square kilometers and a northern border with Andalusia, Spain. One of the main features of Gibraltar’s population is the diversity of their ethnic origins. Gibraltar is one of the most densely populated territories in the world, with a population estimated  to be nearing 30,000, equivalent to approximately 4,290 per square kilometer. The demographics of Gibraltar reflects Gibraltarians' racial and cultural fusion of the many European and other economic migrants who came to the Rock over three hundred years, after almost all of the Spanish population left in 1704. Gibraltar debuted in Miss World 1959 and produced a winner in 2009. Jessica Louise Baldachino, Miss Gibraltar 2012, will represent Gibraltar in Miss World 2012.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Jessica Louise Baldachino, Miss Gibraltar 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
I am 24 years old and I work as a school teacher. I teach Spanish and French, learning languages has always been a great passion of mine and really enjoy being able to transmit that enthusiasm to my pupils. In my free time I love spending time with family and friends, they are extremely supportive and loving and I’m very fortunate to have them in my life. I also enjoy dancing, modeling and presenting different types of shows and programs. I live in Gibraltar which is a British colony in the south of Spain. It is a tight knit, caring community which is very safe to live in. We are blessed to have a diverse range of cultures and religions living in harmony.

2.   What are your plans for the future?
Right now I am focusing on the Miss World pageant, so there is a lot of preparation involved. I am lucky to have a stable career in education so early on in my life, it is reassuring to know I will always have that. I look forward to presenting more shows and possibly traveling abroad to represent my country at different events.

3.    What are you most proud of?
I am proud of my achievements, both educational and personal. I never really thought I would be able to achieve so much in such a short space of time. In the space of three years I have graduated from my degree, a postgraduate degree, come 1st-Runner up in Miss Gibraltar 2011 and then achieved the title of Miss Gibraltar 2012. It takes focus, determination and a little bit of sacrifice but the rewards are amazing.

4.    Which activities make you lose track of time?
Listening to music makes me lose track of time, I just connect my iPod and the hours fly by. Also going on hikes up the Rock of Gibraltar can take hours but it’s so beautiful you don’t realize how long you take.

5.    If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
They would (hopefully!) say that I am a determined and honest woman, who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, and is always willing to listen to those who need a friend.

6.    What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
I think we all have our unique habits and ways of doing things, I can’t think of anything in particular but I’m sure one of my friends would!

7.    Have you done anything memorable lately?
I am so lucky to have taken part in so many memorable events lately that its hard to pick just one. I think if I had to pick one, I would choose the day I met Prince Edward and Princess Sophie of England earlier this month it was great to chat with Royalty and then parade with them down town.

8.    Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
Never trying is definitely worse. Failure doesn’t really exist, it’s all just experience for the next challenge. If you never try, you will never know what you are capable of.

9.    If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
I would teach people nowadays how to be grateful for what they have in their lives, I think that we tend to focus on negative things too often and we overlook everything we are blessed with.

10.    How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?
Beauty has no real definition. I think it is a feeling that comes from within when you are truly happy with yourself and with your life. In preparation for Miss World I will cherish every moment and fully enjoy the experience so that my happiness will shine through.

11.    Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
Thank you to every one who has helped and supported me on the road to Miss Gibraltar, I would not have been able to do it without you. Now I am off for my next stage, to compete in Miss World 2012 and I cannot wait to share my experience with all of you.

and finally...
Personal Motto: Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.
Favorite Food: Asian curries and Italian food. I love anything spicy.
Favorite Color: Gold and Silver
Favorite Song: One Moment in Time Whitney Houston

SWEDEN | 2012 Meet the Misses e.48 - Miss World Sweden 2012

The Kingdom of Sweden is one of the Nordic countries on the Scandinavian peninsula in Northern Europe. It is one of the largest states in the European Union and has a population of 9.4 million. The population concentrates in southern Sweden and along the western coast. About 15% of Sweden lies north of the Arctic Circle. Southern Sweden is predominantly agricultural, with increasing forest coverage northward. Around 65% of Sweden's total land area is covered with forests. Sweden is home to Lake Vänern which is the third largest lake in Europe. Most of Sweden has a temperate climate, despite its northern latitude, with four distinct seasons and mild temperatures throughout the year. Because of Sweden’s high latitude, the length of daylight varies greatly. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets for part of each summer, and it never rises for part of each winter. In addition of the extensive natural wonders, Sweden also boasts a long history reflected in the architecture and is home of fourteen World Heritage Sites. Sweden has one of the most highly developed welfare states in the world, it offers one of the best universal healthcare systems and has one of the best human rights and equality records on the planet. For more than 100 years, Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime. The nation has a successful history in Miss World winning the title three times with Kerstin Håkansson (1951), May Louise Flodin (1952) and Mary Stävin (1977). This year, Sanna Jinnedal will be Sweden's representative at the 62nd Miss World pageant.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Sanna Jinnedal, Miss World Sweden 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1. Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown
My name is Sanna Jinnedal, an 19 years old girl from Sweden. Sweden is a lovely country with really friendly people. We have beautiful nature with a lots of lakes, forests and mountains. Sweden is famous for our swedish meatballs and IKEA. I live in a small town called Borås with around 100,000 inhabitants. My whole life I have been very interested in different sports. I started when I was four years old with gymnastics, four years later I quit and started soccer instead. Later on I discovered athletics and that was my cup of tea. My specialty was high jump and I competed in the Swedish championships for juniors. A year after that I quit. It took to much of my time so I decided to focus on my schoolwork instead. I have also tried boxing for about a month, it was good exercise but I realized that it was not really my thing. I didn't want to destroy my nose you know. On my spare time I hang out with my friend and family and cuddle with my cat. I just graduated from high school there I studied child development so my interest for children is huge.

2. What are your plans for the future?
My first goal is to do a good job and hopefully win the title Miss World. If I don't do that I am going to work with charity and do my best to make a difference.

3. What are you most proud of?
Im most proud of my big brother. He was born with a muscle-decease so he sits in a wheelchair. Despite his difficulties he has today a full time job, driver license and his own car. He can now drive where ever he want without any help from others. I think that's very strong and I am very proud of him.

4. Which activities make you lose track of time?
When a watch a really romantic movie a totally lose track of time. I love that kind of movies.

5. If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
I ask my best friend Sara Varildengen to describe me so here you go:
Sanna is a very warm and generous person, she has a big heart and I feel that a really can trust her. She is humble and she cares a lot about her family and friends wellbeing.

6. What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
One thing that I don't think most people do is that I always think before I talk. The reason for that is that I don't want to hurt anybody, because words can hurt more than you think.

7. Have you done anything memorable lately?
I just graduate from high school with great grades and I had one of the best days in my life. I celebrated with my friends and family the whole day and everybody was happy. One other very memorable thing is this Miss world journey I have done so far. I have met some wonderful people and I have learn so much. And I am very excited to continue this journey in China.

8. Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
I think that never trying is worse because if you never dare to try you never going to learn something. If you fail you have at least learn a lesson and the next time you try, you going to do it right.

9. If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
I would like to teach humanity to treat each other with respect and that all people have equal value. It doesn't matter witch color, religion and background you have, we are all the same. If everyone would follow this, the world would be a better place.

10. How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for miss world to achieve your vision of beauty?
To be beautiful on the outside is not enough, you need to be very humble and caring of other people, that's beauty for me. I also think that at big smile is the most beautiful thing so I'm going to spend so much time as possible with the people that makes me smile before I travel to China.

JAPAN | 2012 Meet the Misses e.47 - Miss World Japan 2012

The Land of the Rising Sun, Japan, is an archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together comprising about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with over 127 million people. Honshū's Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. About 73 percent of Japan is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. As a result, the habitable zones, mainly located in coastal areas, have extremely high population densities. The islands of Japan are located in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Japan is the third largest national economy in the world, after the United States and China. It has a large industrial capacity, and is home to some of the largest and most technologically advanced producers of motor vehicles and electronics. The nation is one of the leaders in scientific research, particularly technology, machinery and biomedical research. Japan debuted in Miss World 1956 and its highest placement was fourth  on the same year. This year, Nozomi Igarashi, Miss World Japan 2012, will be the face of Japan in Ordos.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Nozomi Igarashi, Miss World Japan 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1. Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
I have a great love for buildings, traditional and modern ones, particularly because I studied architecture as a university student. I have other hobbies as well. My main hobbies are taking pictures while taking walks and drawing with Japanese water painting, called suibokuga. Doing these hobbies allows me to always get along with everyone. As for my country, Japan has four distinct seasons, where one will feel its historical and modern aspects. Being born and raised in Yamagata Prefecture in Japan’s northern Tohoku district, I have grown accustomed to its splendid features. Its seafood is delicious, its mountains are beautiful, and its air is clean. Its rice and cherries are also first-class brands, especially in Japan. Yamagata has many historic buildings that resemble the setting of a historical drama. More than anything, the people there are very warm-hearted and sincere.

2. What are your plans for the future?
First, for the pursuit of healthy beauty, it is recommended to create a beautiful body and mind rather than a trendy, skinny body. I want to promote this idea. Second, as Miss World, it is necessary to use this position to help people all around the world. I want to teach everyone the various situations around the world where people need help. Finally, I would like to become a person who could be described as a symbol of “Nozomi”, which means “Hope” in Japanese.

3. What are you most proud of?
I am proud of being born a child of mother earth.

4. Which activities make you lose track of time?
When I am immersed in my hobbies, I lose track of time. This is especially true, especially when playing sports or painting suibokuga, (Japanese water painting). I have always been like this. In fact, before when I was an elementary school student, I often visited nursery schools and nursing homes after school. Sometimes I would sing there so long that it would become dark and I would return home late, making my mother very angry with me. It’s a nice memory though now that I think back on it.

5. If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
My family says I'm funny and wise. My friends also say I behave naturally and act to heal them when I'm with them.

6. What is something you know you do differently than most other people?
I don’t know if this is different, but I know that I am a selfless person. I often put the concerns of others before my own.

7. Have you done anything memorable lately?
My farewell party for the Miss World Pageant was held the other day. Many of my close friends and supporters came to that party, and I felt so happy and grateful to be supported by those wonderful people.

8. Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
Never trying is worse because we can change anything. When I was in elementary school, I practiced tennis every morning for six years. Then I earned 3rd place in a tournament in the prefecture. It was not 1st place, but my coach recognized my efforts, and I became a coach as a result. If you make effort, somebody always watches it, and this builds confidence. Whenever you feel “now is the right time to start”, just do it. It’s never too late in our life to do so.

9. If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
I want to teach "Love" to the prime movers who led the miserable wars that have hurt people around the world.

10. How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?
Beauty is about sound health and brightness in personality. Maintaining a healthy eating habit is the most important point to keep myself positive in mind and heart. In the meantime I exercise, and if I have time I walk my puppy with my friends, take pictures, and go shopping. I like my leisure time.

11. Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
I particularly appreciate the people overseas who helped Japan out in the aftermath of the tsunami that occurred last year. Japan is getting much better and better, thanks to all of you.

and finally...
Personal Motto: To challenge the difficulties, to communicate with people with sincerity.
Favorite Food: Fruit, particularly Yamagata cherries
Favorite Color: Blue
Favorite Song: “Escape” by Rupert Holmes
Favorite Movie: The Pursuit of Happyness
Favorite Book: Kojiki, a compiled list of authors with many editions
Favorite Singer/Band: Utada Hikaru

KOREA | 2012 Meet the Misses e.46 - Miss World Korea 2012

The Republic of Korea is a sovereign state in East Asia, located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It is neighbored by the People's Republic of China to the west, Japan to the east, North Korea to the north, and the East China Sea to the south. Its territory covers a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and has a population of almost 50 million. The capital and largest city is Seoul. Korea can be divided into four general regions: an eastern region of high mountain ranges and narrow coastal plains; a western region of broad coastal plains, river basins, and rolling hills; a southwestern region of mountains and valleys; and a southeastern region dominated by the broad basin of the Nakdong River. Korea's terrain is mostly mountainous with lowlands, located primarily in the west and southeast. About three thousand islands, mostly small and uninhabited, lie off the western and southern coasts of Korea. Jeju-do is located about 100 kilometers off the southern coast and it is the country's largest island. Korea shares its traditional culture with its northern neighbor, but the two Koreas have developed distinct contemporary forms of culture since the peninsula was divided in 1945. Korean traditional architecture is characterized by its harmony with nature. Ancient architects adopted the bracket system that is characterized by thatched roofs and heated floors. People of the upper classes built bigger houses with elegantly curved tiled roofs with lifting eaves. Traditional architecture can be seen in the palaces and temples, preserved old houses called hanok and special sites like Hahoe Folk Village, Yangdong Village of Gyeongju and Korean Folk Village. Traditional architecture may also be seen at the nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Korea. Sung Min Kim is Korea's representative in Miss World 2012 in Ordos.

GERMANY | 2012 Meet the Misses e.45 - Miss World Germany 2012

Germany consists of 16 states while the capital and largest city is Berlin. It is one of the major political powers of the European continent and a technological leader in many fields. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the center of the Protestant Reformation while southern and western parts remained dominated by Roman Catholic denominations. The two factions clashed in the Thirty Years' War. After the occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, most of the German states unified and formed the German Empire. After the German Revolution and the military surrender in World War I, the Empire was replaced by the Weimar Republic in 1918, and partitioned in the Versailles Treaty. Amidst the Great Depression, the Third Reich was proclaimed in 1933. The latter period was marked by Fascism and the World War II. After 1945, Germany was divided by allied occupation, and evolved into two states, East Germany and West Germany. In 1990 Germany was reunified. Germany has the world's fourth largest economy. The country has developed a very high standard of living. Germany has been the home of many influential scientists and inventors, and is known for its cultural and political history. From its roots, culture in Germany has been shaped by major intellectual and popular currents in Europe, both religious and secular. Historically Germany has been called Das Land der Dichter und Denker (the land of poets and thinkers). URUGUAY | 2012 Meet the Misses e.44 - Miss World Uruguay 2012

Uruguay is a country in the southeastern part of South America. It is home to some 3.5 million people, of whom 1.8 million live in the capital Montevideo and its metropolitan area. Uruguay's only land border is with Brazil, to the north. To the west lies the Uruguay River and the estuary of the Río de la Plata to the southwest. To the southeast lies the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. With an area of approximately 176,000 square kilometers, Uruguay is the second-smallest nation in South America by area. Colonia del Sacramento, one of the oldest European settlements in the country, was founded by the Portuguese in 1680. Uruguay won its independence in 1828. The nation is one of the most economically developed countries in South America and the first by human development in Latin America. Uruguay was the first South American country to legalize same-sex and different-sex civil unions at a national level. The Uruguayan landscape features mostly rolling plains and low hill ranges with fertile coastal lowland. A dense fluvial network covers the country, consisting of four river basins or deltas; the Río de la Plata, the Uruguay River, the Laguna Merín and the Río Negro. The highest point in the country is the Cerro Catedral whose peak reaches to 514 meters. Uruguay has 660 km of coastline and is home of nine National Parks. The Uruguayan culture is strongly European and its influences from southern Europe are particularly important. The tradition of the gaucho has been an important element in the art and folklore of both Uruguay and Argentina. Notable tourist destinations in the area include the oceanfront communities of Cabo Polonio, La Paloma and Punta del Diablo. Punta del Este is Uruguay’s most popular and developed beach town. Uruguay debuted in Miss World 1959 and finished fifth in 2000. Valentina Henderson Aromburu, Miss World Uruguay 2012, will represent her nation in Miss World 2012.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Valentina Henderson Aromburu, Miss World Uruguay 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1. Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
My country is south of Latin America, between two great powers such as Argentina and Brazil.
We are a country where sheep and cattle production is of fundamental importance in the economy of Uruguay. We excel in tourism. To the east of Uruguay, we have the internationally renowned resort Punta del Este. This year, Punta del Este saw many celebrities visiting ranging from the creators of the social network Facebook, as well as a Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, and the renowned DJ David Guetta, and a lot more stars that have chosen our beaches for vacations. We cannot let go of the football where Uruguay finished in fourth place in the last World Cup and was champion in the Latin American Cup in 2011. My country was home of the first World Cup in 1930 and Uruguay is the only country that has won in football during the Olympic Games two times in a row. Nowadays we have Suarez which is from my hometown and play with Liverpool. We also have Cavanni playing at Napoli and he is also from my hometown Salto. He is a renowned figure of European football. In short, we have numerous famous athletes. We cannot forget Forlan who won two times the golden slipper and the best player of last World Cup. My hometown is Salto, 500 km north from the capital, is extremely beautiful with its sunsets, but also noted for its hot springs. We have a population of 120,000. Needless to say that if you search on Google, you will realize the beauty that is my land.

2. What are your plans for the future?
I will continue to belong to this wonderful world that I love, I will continue my studies in medicine.

3. What are you most proud of?
Being Uruguayan. This is a country that received all the migratory flows that escaped or were persecuted from wars and found in Uruguay a free country to live in. Our historical roots are in the five continents. We are free, independent and live in a climate of peace. The rest of the achievements so far, with my young age, including winning Miss Uruguay World, but especially the family I have, which supports me in every decision I choose and are always there to guide me and let me learn from my mistakes.
4. Which activities make you lose track of time?
I admire the landscapes, specially the sunsets during the evening from my apartment in the coast. They are relaxing and give you good energy.

5. If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
They say I'm crazy for leaving my boyfriend and my family to go to the pageant.
They will say that I am too young yet. I'm sure they are going to speak well of me because if I look up around the people around me, you will never find an adversary.

6. What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
We are all different but what makes me different from some people is the simplicity and calmness when making big decisions in my life, I think about it I act calmly, serenely and I am guided by my instincts as a woman.

7. Have you done anything memorable lately?
Yes. Fulfill the dream of being the ambassador of the beauty of my country in the world. In my city, I always offer myself as a model for important causes and foundations that need to raise funds for some type of clinical work or of any person, then model for certain brands or boutiques without asking for compensation.

8. Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
Never try because failure is the result of a failed attempt. But not always it will lead to failure. If you never try, you’ll never have the opportunity to succeed.

9. If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
I would teach that we are children of life and that our parents are here to guide us, then we are the ones who make decisions right or wrong but if we ever learned to listen them, our decisions will be the correct ones. I have 18 years old and I learned and understood what my parents tried to tell me to this day. In the future I will teach my children what I learned.
So I tell the world that you can do it. You can do anything in life. You just have to want it, dream it, crave it and then the rest will follow.

10. How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?
I prepare with what my teachers teach me. I prepare with what I get from day to day from other contestants. I prepare myself with the vision of a winner. I take the best of every moment and keep it with me forever.

11. Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
Let's be smart enough to think that everything in life is circumstantial and ephemeral. Let us live this moment. Let's enjoy these joys and prepare for when there are sad times. Do not feel bad from frustrations that steal the joy of a smile.
