ST. KITTS AND NEVIS | 2012 Meet the Misses e.15 - Miss World SKN 2012

Two islands, One Paradise. Saint Kitts and Nevis is a federation located in the Caribbean southeast of Puerto Rico. Saint Kitts was once called the Gibraltar of the West Indies for its domination of 18th century battles and is home to the Fort Brimstone, designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. Saint Kitts is an island that has set aside more than a quarter of its land as a National Park, with a rainforest that is actually expanding in size rather than shrinking and surrounded by new and untouched dive sites, marked by massive beds of coral, teeming with fish of every stripe and color. Nevis is one of the remaining unspoilt places and proudly carries the name, "Queen of the Caribees". From the top of the Nevis Peak to the depths of the clear waters offshore, there is a world of unique flora and fauna. Nevis is shaped like a sombrero and its charm and tranquility takes you back to a time when things were simpler and peaceful. Saint Kitts and Nevis debuted in Miss World 1985 and competed every year until 1988. In 2010, the island nation returned to the pageant and this year Markysa Krisan Javen O'Loughlin, Miss World St. Kitts and Nevis 2012, will be the sixth representative from the islands in the international pageant.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Markysa Krisan Javen O'Loughlin, Miss World St. Kitts and Nevis 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
Greetings from the beautiful twin island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis!  St. Kitts and Nevis was once known as the Mother Colony of the West Indies.  In the colonial era, the British, French and Dutch all fought for my small nation so there must be something special about it and there must be something special about me! My name is Markysa O'Loughlin and I am from the rural east of St. Kitts and Nevis.  We are blessed with temperate climate, golden brown sandy beaches, turquoise waters, unspoiled rain forests, tranquil rivers and the sweetest fruits you can ever eat, living up to our name "Sugar City" .  As a daughter of the soil it is only natural that I love the outdoors!
My favourite place in the world is Friars Bay in St. Kitts- I love to go to that beach. I also love jogging, hiking, reading and cooking.

2.    What are your plans for the future?
In the immediate future, I hope to complete my bachelor's in management studies and then pursue a master's in Education.  I hope to implement the first comprehensive tutoring programme in my country as there is a deficit in individualized learning for struggling students. My greatest wish is that the educational system in my country cater to a wider cross section of students so none are marginalized because of neglect in the school setting.

3.    What are you most proud of?
The late Robert Nesta Marley proclaimed: "My life is only important if I can help plenty people".   At age 20, I am proud to say - I have dedicated my life to helping others. I volunteered in several capacities whether it be coordinating school events, volunteering for free income tax return preparation or tutoring.   I especially enjoy tutoring struggling students to help them succeed because I believe every child has a right to a solid education.

4.    Which activities make you lose track of time?
Reading and listening to music!
I absolutely love reading and I can literally get lost in a book. I feel as though the more you read the better you can engage with the everyday challenge that may come along in life. Some of my favourite books include: "Sula","Kindred", "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks",  "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "There Eyes Were Watching God". I also enjoy writing, so some day I hope to write my very own novel! Look out for a best seller (wink).
I also love music. Music is life, music is history, music tells a story.  I really enjoy performances from live bands.. My favourite bands are the Royaltiez Band, Nu Vybes Band Int'l and Cold Play.
I love soca music, reggae, calypso, hip-hop and zouk.  I can get lost in time to the melodious sounds of Marvin Gay, Bob Marley and his son Damian, Michael Jackson, Machel Montano and I also like new American rapper J.Cole. Music has become a big part of my life because it relaxes me and lyrics that I listen to help me better engage with the people around me so that I may show them love, respect and support.

5.    If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
Words that I've actually heard people describe me as are ENERGETIC, EMPATHETIC, BOLD, AMBITIOUS and CHARISMATIC.

6.    What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
I point with my middle finger. (Laughing)

7.    Have you done anything memorable lately?
I had fun interviewing pageant contestants for the Green Valley Festival Queen Pageant during their interview segment in June 2012. Green Valley is my home town so I was honoured and elated when I had the opportunity be a part of staging of that pageant.

8.    Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?

Never trying is far worse than failing. I feel like it is always best to attempt your goals. We should always be optimistic,  letting go of fears and inhibitions so that we can give ourselves more ways to succeed. Not trying altogether can make us miss out on what can be some of the best moments of our lives.

9.    If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
An important value I think everyone should know and I would be happy to teach is that we should love and respect each other despite differences whether physical or philosophical.  Too many persons are discriminated against or marginalized because of "race", beliefs, nationality, sexuality, gender, age etc. This is a modern world where I feel we should all be enlightened enough not to let these insignificant differences cripple the progress of humanity.

10.    How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?

Beauty to me is loving oneself.  You are beautiful when you know yourself, believe in yourself, trust yourself, accept yourself, be yourself and LOVE yourself. All of these facets of beauty are important and my participation in the Miss World Pageant gives me the platform to help others find within themselves beauty in the aforementioned context, thus achieving my vision of beauty.

11.    Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
There is a world out there that is filled with people who need each other.  I encourage you all to be your brother's keeper and always seek ways to help others.  Leave behind a legacy of compassion, empathy and goodwill knowing that generations to come will benefit from whatever you to today to make the world a better place. Blessings.
