PUERTO RICO | 2012 Meet the Misses e.21 - Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico 2012

Puerto Rico, the Island of Enchantment, is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. Puerto Rico's history goes back 2000 years before the common era. Around year 300 and after the 7th century the Taíno culture started to develop and dominate the island. In 1493, Christopher Columbus arrived on his second voyage. This marked the start of the Spanish colonization of the island.  Puerto Rico soon became a stronghold and a significant port for the expansion of the Spanish Empire. During the Spanish regime, the Puerto Rican culture began to flourish with influences from the Taino, the Sub-Saharan Africans and the Spaniards.
In 1898, the United States invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War which lead to Spain ceding Puerto Rico to the United States. In 1917, Puerto Ricans were collectively made United States Citizens via the Jones Act, and in 1952 Puerto Rico officially became a Commonwealth of the United States.
Puerto Rico is mostly mountainous with large coastal areas in the north and south. The island is home to the world renowned El Yunque National Forest and the Río Camuy Cave Park. The famous Arecibo Observatory is also located in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's capital San Juan is the second oldest European-established city in the Americas and features the iconic Old San Juan. The island has given a large amount of singers, actors, actresses and artists to the world, notably Ricky Martin, a worldwide singing sensation.
Puerto Rico debuted in Miss World 1959 and produced a winner in 1975 with Wilnelia Merced. The island have produced eleven semifinalists, eight of them since 2002 including two third placers in 2005 and 2011. This year, Janelee Marcus Chaparro Colón, Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico 2012, will represent Puerto Rico at the 62nd Miss World pageant.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Janelee Marcus Chaparro Colón, Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
I am a 20 year old young woman. I am a very perseverant and happy person. I live in Puerto Rico, a tropical island surrounded by beautiful beaches and spectacular nature. I grew up in the coastal town of Barceloneta, where I still live with my family. The Island of Enchantment is renowned for the warmth and happiness of its people.

2.    What are your plans for the future?

In my future, I see myself finishing my studies in criminal justice to then study law and become a criminal attorney.

3.    What are you most proud of?
I feel very proud of the goals I have achieved until today as a student and as a model. I have worked very hard for both with great effort, commitment and perseverance. I feel proud to count with the support of my family and friends who always have been there to encourage me in every goal I set in my life. I feel great pride of having the opportunity of representing my beautiful island in this world event where I will have the honor of being called Puerto Rico.

4.    Which activities make you lose track of time?

For me, there is nothing better than having a good conversation with my family. Be able to sit with them and tell each other the things we do during the day and hear a wise advice. I can spend hours with them and I never get tired because they make me feel at peace.

5.    If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
If someone describes me, they would say I am a very happy and humble person. I am a person full of faith and perseverance.

6.    What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
Regardless of how busy I am or how difficult the week was, I always reserve Sundays to go to church and give thanks to God. Every Sunday morning I have a commitment with God and then with my family.

7.    Have you done anything memorable lately?
Every day of my training is memorable. Every single detail I learn is extremely important and it is another step for self-improvement. Hearing people showing me support and trust despite not knowing me is always memorable.

8.    Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
The worst is never having the courage of trying because you’ll never know the potential you have if you don’t dare to experiment and evolve as a human being in a personal and professional level.

9.    If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
I would like to teach to families the importance of values, the importance of respecting others and ourselves. With this, we can start the foundation of a stable and crime-free society.

10.    How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?
The meaning of beauty goes beyond any physical quality that a person has. Beauty is all about feelings, genuineness, uniqueness, good intentions, the desire of living and enjoying life. You can sense all of these qualities through the eyes of a person and it is what makes each one of us special. In a pageant where physical beauty is abundant, it is important to showcase the qualities that make us unique. I strive for this and to learn and enjoy this experience. I will be myself always.

11.    Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
From the depths of my heart, I thank you for the unconditional support that I’ve received in this new stage of my life. It is an experience that has helped me grow as a person. This experience is more than a dream; it is a blessing that I can share with every single one of you. Hugs and Kisses!
