NEW ZEALAND | 2012 Meet the Misses e.6 - Miss World New Zealand 2012

The land of the long white cloud, New Zealand, is located in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is multicultural, diverse, stunning and is one of the most recently settled land masses. New Zealand offers a distinctive fauna with many species not found anywhere else. The nation has a dramatic and varied landscape on the two main islands: the North Island and the South Island. Both islands are divided by the Cook Strait which connects the Tasman Sea with the Pacific Ocean. The South Island is the largest of the two and feature the majestic Southern Alps and numerous unspoiled forests. Active volcanoes, ancient native forests, prehistoric glaciers, snow-covered Alps have been internationally recognized as irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. UNESCO recognized three areas as world heritage sites. They are the Tongariro National Park, Te Wahipounamu and the Subantarctic Islands. New Zealand also have bustling cities, namely Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. At the world's greatest beauty contest, New Zealand debuted in 1956 and have produced many semifinalists and finalists. This year, Aotearoa will be represented by Collette Lochore who was crowned Miss World New Zealand 2012 on April 27.
The Times of Beauty proudly presents Collette Lochore, Miss World New Zealand 2012, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself, your country and your hometown.
My name is Collette Lochore and I am proud to say I am from New Zealand. I grew up in the small, country town (Kumeu) where I spent most of my life and in the last couple of years I have moved all over Auckland. I teach Drama and Speech, specializing in Theater to those aged 3 – 18 years old and was recently promoted to Manager of the Drama Company! I also act professionally myself and model part-time. I love dancing, singing in character, presenting, hosting, public speaking and in general – performing! My work with charities is a highlight in my life and I look forward to having the opportunity to raise awareness and increase the impact of my actions.

2.    What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the near future are to travel and visit many other countries and engross myself in different cultures, communities and ways of life. I want to share what I have to offer and in return learn and embrace others from all over the world.

3.    What are you most proud of?
I have achieved so much in my life so far, so much that I am proud of. However, what enabled me to have so many proud moments are certain characteristics that I have – and these, are what I am most proud of. I am most proud of my determination, self-motivation and independence. For example:
-    Selected for the netball team ‘Netball North’ which was one team away from trailing for the NZ team in 2010.

4.    Which activities make you lose track of time?
The saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun”. This 100% applies to my day to day life. Every day I am thoroughly enjoying myself, finding that the days go so quickly and I don’t want the days to end. I look forward, in face that is an understatement….. I cannot wait to get up the next day! My job of Managing a Drama company and teaching children, alongside with planning and preparing for Miss World, are both activities I thrive on however easily make me lose track of time!

5.    If somebody was describing your personality what would they say?
My drive for life is a very strong personality trait that everyone comments on and my enthusiasm and determination put into any task I am faced with. “Mature beyond her years” is something I hear next to every other day. A positive, compassionate, caring and loving attitude, alongside with my fun upbeat sense of humour (I am usually the one making everyone laugh) are all words used to describe my personality.

6.    What is something you know you do differently than the most other people?
My compassion and empathy really sets me aside from most people. My ability to sense others emotions and my skill to communicate with anyone, allows me to really connect with others. Allowing people to feel comfortable around me is something I know I do differently than most, because some find it difficult to adapt and take lead in new, overwhelming or ‘awkward’ situations.

7.    Have you done anything memorable lately?
Each term I choose one Drama student to receive a Drama scholarship. This is presented in front of hundreds of other people after the term performance. Last term I gave this scholarship to an 11 year old boy. Not only was he a very talented actor, he was helpful, generous, considerate, caring and so respectful and captivated by Drama. The reason why the moment of giving this boy his Drama scholarship was so memorable was because I knew in my heart that it meant the world to him. It was a great moment and the look on his face when I called his name was a very memorable moment for me, because it was me who allowed him to have that amazing feeling and time in his life.

8.    Which is worse, failing or never trying? Why?
Without failure one cannot learn and grow as a person. I am not afraid to fail and I feel thus to not try, is to not live life to one’s full potential. Try, try and try again and internally, emotionally and spiritually you will not fail.

9. If you could teach anyone anything, what would that be?
To be able to give without the intention of receiving is something I value dearly and hold very close to my heart. I feel privileged to have this value in a modern world that only seems to take. I would teach to humanity that the feeling of self-accomplishment and pure happiness from giving to those who need help, without expecting anything in return, is priceless. This is a value I have learned through my Beauty with a Purpose and I see it as a responsibility of mine to educate this value further.

10. How do you define beauty? How will you prepare for Miss World to achieve your vision of beauty?
It is no secret that someone can be physically captivating by outer beauty and appearance, however if their inside beauty (personality, heart, values) do not match, their outer appearance then appears less attractive and inviting. This also applies in opposite - someone who is seen as not as ‘physically attractive’ but who radiates beauty from within instantly appears more physically beautiful on the outside. Therefore, TRUE beauty ultimately comes from within and I truly believe this. People will very quickly pick up on someone’s true beauty even if it does not replicate the outer beauty.
I feel that true beauty is something that cannot be prepared. If you have a kind, loving and giving heart and a personality which holds positive values and charisma, there is not much preparation to be done except being yourself. However, in my lead up to Miss World I will be exceeding efforts to give examples and show my inner beauty through getting heavily involved with charity.

11.    Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
Kia Ora, salam, nǐ hǎo, lei ho, salut, góðan dag, Dia duit, ciào and hello to everyone from all over the world!
Thank you to all of my supporters, not just from New Zealand, but from all over the globe. I am very passionate and excited to be a part of Miss World and I look forward to sharing my journey with each and every one of my supporters. I am thrilled about the opportunity to converse and engage with people from other parts of the world. I want to learn and embrace other cultures and countries.
