2011 Meet the Misses v.36 - Ungfrú Ísland 2011

Iceland is a European island country in the north Atlantic Ocean on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 square kilometers. The capital and the largest city is Reykjavík. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterized by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. The settlement of Iceland began in AD 874 when the chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson became the first permanent Norse settler on the island. Over the following centuries, Norsemen settled Iceland, bringing with them slaves of Gaelic origin. From 1262 to 1918 Iceland was part of the Norwegian and later the Danish monarchies before becoming a republic in 1944. Iceland maintains a Nordic welfare system providing universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. In recent years, Iceland has been one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. Icelandic culture is founded upon the nation's Norse heritage. Most Icelanders are descendants of Norse and Gaelic settlers. The Icelandic language is closely related to Faroese and some West Norwegian dialects. The country's cultural heritage includes traditional Icelandic cuisine, poetry, and the medieval Icelanders' sagas. In geological terms Iceland is very young. The landscape is alive with the restless play of nature's forces. In some places where swirling glacial rivers race over rugged terrain on their way seaward, the scenery looks custom-built for river rafting. Glaciers cover one-ninth of Iceland's land surface. Vatnajokull, at 3,300 square miles, is the largest glacier in Europe. Other glacier favorites are the mystical Snaefellsjokull on Snaefellsnes peninsula, Myrdalsjokull on the south coast, and Langjokull where west Iceland borders the highlands, the closest major glacier to the capital, Reykjavik. Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital city, is just as much a part of the Icelandic experience as the midnight sun or the magical moonlike landscapes of the interior. Iceland debuted in Miss World 1955 and produced three winners: Holmfridur Karlsdóttir (1985), Linda Pétursdóttir (1988) and Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir (2005). This year Sigrún Eva Ármannsdóttir, Ungfrú Ísland 2011, will represent Iceland at the 61st Miss World pageant.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Sigrún Eva Ármannsdóttir, Ungfrú Ísland 2011, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1. Give us an introduction of yourself.
My name is Sigrún Eva and I‘m a 18 year old girl from Iceland. I am a student at FVA high school, in my home town Akranes. My main hobbies are traveling around Iceland, especially near the glaciers. I play the piano a lot, I have been learning for 10 years. I live with my family, my mother Margrét, Ármann my father and my brother Haukur with his girlfriend Angela and of course my black Labrador Tinna. I do not drink nor smoke, I practiced swimming for 6 years but stopped recently. Although I sometimes swim by myself. I‘m a happy girl with a great group of people around me that I love and adore.

2. Tell us a bit more about your country and hometown.
Iceland is an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is located on a so called "hotspot" that´s why we have so much volcanic activity. We are exactly in the center of the Atlantic rift, so we can say that the west coast is in America and the east in Europe. It's because the continental plates come together right in the middle of Iceland. The heat gives us geothermal energy and other natural wonders. It is not only the heat we have, Iceland is known for its pure water, clean air and rich fishing grounds. Iceland was the first country in the world to democratically elect a female president and the parliament is one of the oldest. Every house in Iceland is either heated with electricity or natural hot water that comes from the ground, it can be found all over Iceland. Akranes my hometown was founded by Irish people. The population of Akranes is approximately 6,000 people and it‘s only a half hour drive from Reykjavik the capital of Iceland. One of the most beautiful things that features Akranes in my opinion is our mountain Akrafjall that is very popular for hiking. There are 318,200 people living in Iceland.

3. What does it mean to you to represent your country at the 61st Miss World finals?
It means that I have to do my best in everything I am set before hand, to stand tall, make my country and family proud and be a good role model.

4. If you have to choose a song to describe yourself, which would you choose and why?
Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie. It really reminds me of winter which is my favorite season. Also because before I was asked to participate in my first pageant, which was the qualifier for Miss Iceland, I was much more shy and my self esteem wasn't the highest. But now just by participating even if I wouldn't have won it really helped me to open up and be more outgoing . What I read from the lyrics in this beautiful song is that she's fighting to conquer the things in her life and eventually she manages to do so.

5. How would you describe a typical day in your life?
I would wake up about 7:00am to get ready for school then at 8:30am school starts. After school I sometimes have piano lessons then go home and have an easy going rest of the day, or meet up with my friends and do something fun. For example, I love going to the movies with my friends, we do that a lot! But I'm really a home sweet home kind of a girl, I just love having some alone time with my family and dog Tinna.

6. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I would love to be a successful doctor of some kind or maybe a model but you never really know what you will turn out to be doing after 10 years! Although I have a feeling that my future is bright and joyful.

7. Which well known person from your country you most admire and why?
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. She paved the way for other women in the world by getting elected the first female president in the world.

8. If you had to choose any other country to live in, which one would you choose and why?
I love living in Iceland but if I HAD to choose i would probably choose Norway because I've heard it's really beautiful there and the people are very welcoming.

9. After the Sendai Earthquake, nuclear energy has become a focus of attention. Are you in favor or against the use of this kind of energy as a way to reduce the dependence on oil?
I think it's devastating how it has done great harm to people that didn't deserve to be harmed. So I am against nuclear energy.

10. What do you think is the worst kind of human injustice or prejudice happening now?
All the child labor in the world and how many people suffer from poverty.

11. What are your duties as Ungfrú Ísland?
I have to be a good role model and appear at important events.

12. What role can social media (ex. Facebook, Twitter, etc) play in the life of a beauty pageant titleholder?
It's an easy way to get in touch with you for all sorts of things, like this interview would be a lot harder to take if it wasn't for Facebook.

13. What does it mean to be a human being?
You make mistakes but mistakes are to be learned from. You do everything you possibly can to survive and pursuit happiness.

14. What do you feel is your purpose in life?
To be happy, love and support my family and friends.

15. Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
Never doubt yourself, be honest to yourself, be open to new opportunities that come your way and never be afraid to take advantage of them. Don't try being anyone else but you. And remember that nobody is perfect.
