2011 Meet the Misses v.19 - Mis Latvija 2011

Latvia, the pearl of the Baltic States, is one of the European Union member states and is situated in the North of Europe – on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Since ancient times Latvia has been at the cross-roads between East and West, North and South. Latvia is a multi-cultural state, where the traditions of all these countries have merged. Latvia is a contemporary European country, and its capital city is Riga, a modern metropolis in which historical architecture, unique in Europe, alternates with modernity. Latvia is widely known because of its unspoilt nature where you can find 500 km of beaches including Jūrmala which is one of the longest beaches in Europe. 45% of Latvia’s territory is covered by natural forests, offering various recreational possibilities in nature. It is also known because of the diversity of historical, culture and architectural sites. World War I and II, as well as the army of the Soviet Union, have left notable military monuments such as Liepāja which used to be one of the main naval bases on the Baltic Sea during both the period of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Latvia is made unique by its two different worlds – the European metropolis Riga and the rest of Latvia – a rural environment with unspoilt nature, tranquil towns and a green environment. Latvia debuted in Miss World 1989 and this year the charming Alise Miškovska, Mis Latvija 2011, will represent her country at the 61st Miss World pageant.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Alise Miškovska, Mis Latvija 2011, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

There are beautiful and wonderful countries on the shores of the Baltic Sea. One of them is Latvia. Latvia is not a big country, but the roots of its history go deep into the ancient times. Latvia has got many interesting traditions and habits. People of Latvia are proud of the natural resources of their country. For example, the world-famous Jūrmala Resort which is immersed into extensive forests and nature parks on the territory of 32 km along the shores of the Gulf of Riga.
There will never be shortage of drinking water in my country because there are 2000 lakes, 12600 brooks and rivers in Latvia.
Riga – the capital of Latvia - is one the most beautiful European cities. There is a huge number of unique historical and cultural monuments in Riga, for example, the oldest pharmacy, the biggest and the oldest market (Riga Central Market) in Europe. And they are still functioning!
And, of course, dear to my heart my hometown Daugavpils - (Dinaburg is the old name) – a beautiful tidy town where good and kind people of various nationalities and confessions live and work together. I am happy to be born and dwell here.
And let the title of the national hymn of Latvia – God, bless Latvia! - be with my dear beloved country!
