2011 Meet the Misses v.17 - Miss World Panamá 2011

Panama is the bridge of the Americas. It is situated on the isthmus that connects North and South America. It is bordered by Colombia, Costa Rica, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Panama became a republic in 1903 with the help of the United States allowing the Panama Canal to be built. Revenues from the Panama Canal represent a significant portion of the country's gross domestic product. Panama has the largest rainforest in the Western Hemisphere outside the Amazon Basin which is home to an abundance of tropical plants, animals and birds. Some of them to be found nowhere else in the world. The dominant feature of the country's landforms is the central spine of mountains and hills that forms the continental divide. The divide does not form part of the great mountain chains of North America, and only near the Colombian border are there highlands related to the Andean system of South America. A nearly impenetrable jungle forms the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. This and forest protection movements create a break in the Pan-American Highway, which otherwise forms a complete road from Alaska to Patagonia. Panama have a population of over 3.4 million with more than half the population living in the Panama City–Colón metropolitan corridor. Panama debuted in Miss World 1967 and finished in sixth place twice in 1983 and 2009. This year, Miss World Panamá 2011, Irene del Carmen Núñez Quintero will represent her country in Miss World 2011.

The Times of Beauty proudly presents Irene del Carmen Núñez Quintero, Miss World Panamá 2011, in an exclusive interview for our interview series, Meet the Misses.

1. Give us an introduction of yourself.
My name is Irene del Carmen Nuñez. I am 24 years old, Panamanian, finishing my Hotel Management major. I am a professional model and dancer willing to win Miss World 2011.

2. Tell us a bit more about your country and hometown.
Panama is privileged for its geographical position which is why we have the world famous Panama Canal. We have an amazing biodiversity in contrast with our impressive skyline and beautiful people who are recognized everywhere for their warmness.

3. What does it mean to you to represent your country at the 61st Miss World finals?
For me it is a huge responsibility that I acquired by winning the national pageant and it means I have a new challenge in my life ,but also I feel honored to represent my Panama at the 61s Miss World finals.

4. If you have to choose a song to describe yourself, which would you choose and why?
Let’s talk about Love by Celine Dion because I am very passionate and the lyrics of the song are really meaningful to me. It represents me and everything I love.

5. How would you describe a typical day in your life?
A day in my life is completely full of duties. I always start with a breakfast prepared by me. I do some exercise once or twice a day. I have different appointments so you can see me at the bank, the supermarket, the mall, simply everywhere. I like to be very active and now I am completely focusing my days in my preparation for Miss World.

6. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I can see through a little hole that my life will be wonderful. I will have a huge family and own my business and great memories of the past. I see myself focusing on my career in tourism.

7. Which well known person from your country you most admire and why?
I can tell that a person I admire is the famous Salsa singer and composer Ruben Blades. He was Ministry of Tourism and he really positioned Panama as a tourist destination very smartly using his fame as a key.

8. If you had to choose any other country to live in, which one would you choose and why?
I won’t choose any other but my Panama; I’ve travel a lot but my heart always find its way back home.

9. After the Sendai Earthquake, nuclear energy has become a focus of attention. Are you in favor or against the use of this kind of energy as a way to reduce the dependence on oil?
I think we should look for new ways of getting energy and start to realize how we can help save our planet. I’ve heard hydrogen is one of the ways and I know we are not so far away from these technologies.

10. What do you think is the worst kind of human injustice or prejudice happening now?
Discrimination is the worst kind of human injustice. I think we are all the same doesn’t matter our social status, color of our skin or race and we should all defend equality.

11. What are your duties as Miss Panamá World?
I have many duties and responsibilities but I can resume them by telling you that I have to give 100% not only in the outside (beauty) but also intellectually and emotionally. The balance and responsibility are the key of all my duties.

12. What role can social media (ex. Facebook, Twitter, etc) play in the life of a beauty pageant titleholder?
I think it really helps with the exposure it gives but also for me it is important because it changes the point of view people in general have about beauty queens. We are humans who live, have problems, friends, family and an ordinary life, the only difference is the purpose God gave us in life.

13. What does it mean to be a human being?
For me it means that God create us for a specific reason and with a specific purpose to accomplish.

14. What do you feel is your purpose in life?
My purpose is to help others change their point of view of life and help them improve their faith as someone did once with me. I also teach others everything I know to leave a legacy for the next generations.

15. Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
On top of beauty I have 3 important pillars in my life. I call them the 3 F's: Family, Faith and Friends. I exhort you to think about yours in order to have a perfect balance in your life. Thank you for your time and blessings from Miss World Panama 2011.
