Miss World 2010: Meet Miss Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the worlds only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. The country has a highly developed economy, with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world. It is one of the wealthiest nations of the planet. Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union and the United Nations, reflecting the political consensus in favor of integration. The city of Luxembourg, the capital and largest city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the European Union. Luxembourg is a trilingual country; German, French and Luxembourgish are official languages. The nation is one of the smallest countries in Europe. The northern third of the country is dominated by hills and low mountains. The southern two-thirds of the country are more densely populated. It is also more diverse, and can be divided into five geographic sub-regions. Luxembourg debuted in Miss World back in 1957. The nation returned to the pageant in 2009 after a 19-year absence. This year, Shari Thuyns will represent Luxembourg at the world's greatest beauty contest. She won the Miss Luxembourg 2010 pageant last December.
TimesOfBeauty.com proudly presents Miss Luxembourg 2010 in an exclusive interview for our series Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself.
My name is Shari Thuyns. I have one older brother and sister and one younger brother. I'm a student in civil engineering and hope to continue my studies in interior design. At home we speak Dutch since both my parents are originally from the Netherlands (although my Dad was born in Indonesia).

2.    Tell us a bit more about your country and hometown.
I live in Luxembourg City which is a small but beautiful (green) city with lots (156!) of different nationalities! You can hear almost any language spoken when you are traveling by bus! 60% of the population in Luxembourg city are of foreign nationality. The official language of the country is Luxembourgish but in primary school we learn German and French and in secondary school English as well. I think this is a huge advantage since we are able to communicate with all our neighbors.... and even beyond!
Luxembourg is a financial center as well as host to a lot of European institutions and manufactures iron and steel and agricultural products. It is a very green city with lots of parks and forests that are surrounding the city.

3.    What does it mean to you to represent your country at Miss World?

I think that I'm the perfect representative of "Luxembourg today": Dutch-Indonesian-French-German roots! So I am multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual to the core!

4.    What preparations have you done so far or will you do for the Miss World final?
Jogging, swimming and dance exercises.

5.    If you have to describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
"Gezellig" this means social! I love going out with friends and chatting with people.

6.    Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Designing interiors for houses in a sunny country.

7.    Would you prefer being beautiful and rich or poor and smart?
I think that if you're intelligent you have every opportunity to improve your life! I think inner beauty is more important than a beautiful but empty head!

8.    Which well known person from your country you most admire and why?
Frank and Andy Schleck (cyclists) because they finally put Luxembourg on the world map!

9.    If you had to choose any other country to live in, which one would you choose and why?
First I would like to do some traveling before deciding where to live. There are so many lovely spots on this earth!

10.    What do you think is the biggest problem facing the world today and what should be done about it?
Arms! If governments would use the money instead of buying arms to feed their population and give priority to education and health care the world would be a different place!

11.    Do you believe a beauty queen should be politically correct when answering a controversial subject question or should she express her personal views on the issue?
A beauty queen should always be diplomatic in her answers although she is nevertheless entitled to her own opinion. She should use discernment when to advocate her own opinion publicly!
12.    What do you most look forward to about the Miss World Festival?
To get the opportunity to see all those exceptional places in China!

13.    The winner of Miss World will be the 60th Miss World. Which former winner do you most admire and why?
No one in particular. They are all fantastic!

14.    The motto of Miss World is Beauty with a Purpose. What does Beauty with a Purpose mean to you?
"Beauty with a purpose" to me means that it is not enough to rely on good looks but that you should strive to improve the world with your small contribution and make a difference.

15.    Share a message to your supporters and readers of The Times of Beauty.
Always give your best in whatever you do and never give up!
