Miss World 2010: Meet Miss Uruguay

Uruguay is the smallest independent state in South America but it is considered the most democratic nation in the region. It is one of the countries with the highest literacy rate in Latin America and the second most pacific nation of the planet. Uruguay has a high European influence in the population as a result of immigrants from this continent in the near past. This great country debuted at the world's greatest beauty contest back in 1959 and its highest placement happened in 2000 with the unforgettable Katja Thomsen Grien who finished as 4th runner-up. Uruguay will be represented in Miss World 2010 by Eliana Sabrina Olivera Gonnet, who won the Miss Mundo Uruguay 2010 title last March. She was part of the Miss World Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa. proudly presents Miss Mundo Uruguay 2010 in an exclusive interview for our series Meet the Misses.
1.  Give us an introduction of yourself.
My name is Eliana Olivera Gonnet, I am 22 years old and I will represent Uruguay in Miss World 2010. I live in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. I am studying to become a school teacher. I would like to teach children with intellectual disabilities.

2. Tell us a bit more about your country and hometown.
My country is Uruguay, it is in South America between Argentina and Brazil. My hometown is Montevideo. The city is bordered by a river called Rio de la Plata. We have a fantastic rambla, which is a road that runs along the river shores. My country has 3.5 million inhabitants and it is divided into 19 provinces. The countryside is beautiful and full of with green meadows. We have kilometers of sandy and beautiful beaches. The most famous seaside resort is Punta del Este. The people are very nice, friendly and polite. Our main traditions are el candombe, the carnival, drinking mate and eating asado. The carnival is the longest in the world, it lasts from January to March.

3. What does it mean to you to represent your country at Miss World?

For me, it is a great honor to represent my country in this international beauty contest. I have the possibility to show my country, its traditions, and how beautiful it is, to the entire world.

4. What preparations have you done so far or will you do for the Miss World final?
I have been training to be fit. I have been studying English and general culture. My director, Antonio Vergara Olmos, is the person who is helping me to be in the best physical and intellectual conditions to get to the Miss World finals.

My present president, José Mujica, because he has fought all his life for his ideals. He is very honest, straightforward, he always says what he thinks and people feel indentified with him.

I would not like to live in another country because I think Uruguay is the best country to live in. There are no wars, no frequent natural disasters and we live in peace.

It depends in which country you are living in. In some parts of  the world people are dying of hunger. In other countries there are natural disasters, and in other countries there are wars. I think all the countries of the world need to join together and collaborate to solve these problems.
