Miss World 2010: Meet Miss New Zealand

The land of the long white cloud, New Zealand, is located in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is a fascinating and exotic country with a distinctive fauna and is one of the most recently settled land masses. New Zealand has a dramatic and varied landscape on the two main islands. The North Island is less mountainous but has volcanic activity. The South Island is the largest of the two and have Southern Alps and numerous forests covering the land. At the world's greatest beauty contest, New Zealand debuted in 1956 and have produced many semifinalists and finalists. This year, Aotearoa will be represented by Cody Carlece Yerkovich who won the Miss World New Zealand 2010 title last May. proudly presents Miss World New Zealand 2010 in an exclusive interview for our series Meet the Misses.

1.    Give us an introduction of yourself.
Hello, my name is Cody Carlece Yerkovich and I am extremely proud to be Miss World New Zealand 2010.  I have the amazing opportunity to be a part of Miss World 2010. I am a very down to earth, motivated, kind, determined, optimistic, loving and genuine young woman. I love to strive to the best of my abilities and always make the most of what I have in life learning from my mistakes and any obstacles along the way. I am passionate about children and being able to change lives for the better. This give me inner satisfaction and happiness which comes from dedicating your time and spirit to help a child in need.

2.    Tell us a bit more about your country and hometown.
I am from the far north region of New Zealand, the town of Kaitaia. Some may know it as the winterless north. A green land with breathtaking views and tropical beaches. You can drive for about 20 minutes between two coastlines in opposite sides. There are miles of sand dunes which tower into the clouds, vast farmlands and animals. This is the land where the ancient Moa bird used to live and it is home the largest beach in the southern hemisphere with a length of 90 miles. This is a place where everybody is friendly and genuine, where I have grown up to appreciate the small things in life and to truly appreciate who I am, I am so proud to call New Zealand home.

3.    What does it mean to you to represent your country at Miss World?

Words cannot describe, I am so very proud to have this opportunity. Taking part in Miss World 2010 means the world to me. I am happy to have my family and friends loving support.  The experience will be one to treasure forever.

4.    What preparations have you done so far for the Miss World final?
I have been doing things such as eating healthy, regular exercise, designing my gowns, working on my Beauty with a Purpose project, and being myself following my goals and achieving them.

5.    If you have to describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
If I had to describe myself in one word I would have to say I am a very disciplined. When I was younger, if a task was assigned to me I always had the inner self discipline to achieve or accomplish it. I believe this is a very important quality in life, one that I am lucky enough to have.

6.    Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
In ten years, I see myself with a successful arts and fashion business. I will have my own charity in order to raise awareness on my younger brother’s illness. To have traveled to every corner of the world helping those children whom are underprivileged even in the areas that many people may not be aware of and to be happy with myself and with all of the friends and family that I have today.

7.    Would you prefer being beautiful and rich or poor and smart?

My choice is being poor and smart. There are so many forms of beauty and beauty is a personal perception, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". In my eyes, being smart is beautiful and having all the money in the world for yourself will make you happy.
8.    Which well known person from your country you most admire and why?
I would have to say my mother. Although she is not well known to New Zealand, she is well known to me. Without her support I would not be the young woman I am today. Thank you mum.

9.    If you had to choose any other country to live in, which one would you choose and why?
I would choose Croatia. I am part Croatian and have relatives in Croatia. I would love to get to know them. Knowing your past is very important to me.

10.    What do you think is the biggest problem facing the world today and what should be done about it?
I believe that there are so many  problems going on in the world today such as the global economic crisis, peak oil, water crisis, extinction of species, and climate change to name a few. However a problem I would like to help is one which has been around for years and that is the average education our children around the world are receiving. We need to enable them to get a better education, a better quality of life and give them that little opportunity, the "key"to life and humanity which they did not have before. Education may be one word but it truly does have a thousand meanings.

11.    Do you believe a beauty queen should be politically correct when answering a controversial subject question or should she express her personal views on the issue?
I believe she should express her personal views although in a respectful manner. If she were to be politically correct even when she do not agree with it, she is not being true to herself.

12.    What do you most look forward to about the Miss World Festival?

The everlasting friendships I will make, the people, traveling. All these daily experiences will become memories that will be with me forever.

13.    The winner of Miss World will be the 60th Miss World. Which former winner do you most admire and why?
I admire every past winner as they are all unique in their own individual ways however, Zi Lin Zhang stands out to me, the way she carries herself reflects her personality and the beautiful woman she is.

14.    The motto of Miss World is Beauty with a Purpose. What does Beauty with a Purpose mean to you?
Beauty with a purpose to me means using your inner and outer beauty to not only raise funds for charity but to use your position in the eye of the public to promote charities, to work of charities and in return get the self satisfaction of doing that. To me, it is true beauty.
